More than 750 migrants rescued south of Greek island of Gavdos

In a series of large-scale operations under the coordination of the Unified Search and Rescue Coordination Center and with the assistance of the Greek Coast Guard, more than 750 migrants were rescued in the sea around the island of Gavdos in Greece.

According to the Greek National Coast Guard, the largest operation was recorded 25 nautical miles southeast of Gavdos, where 430 people were rescued aboard an overloaded fishing vessel. They were assisted by a patrol boat and a Panamanian-flagged tanker. The rescued people were transported to the port of Agia Galini.

Another 67 migrants were spotted 30 nautical miles south of Gavdos by a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship. They were also intercepted and transferred to the port of Palaiochora on Crete.

In a separate incident, dozens more were picked up by a coast guard patrol boat near Gavdos and taken to the island.

All rescued people were transferred to safe reception points, where they were registered, offered food, water and treatment./CNA
