Israel to send delegation to talks with Hamas

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that he would send a delegation to Doha for indirect talks with Hamas, dozens have been killed in the Gaza Strip from the Israeli offensive.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday (06.07.) that he would send a delegation to the Qatari capital, Doha, to hold ceasefire talks with Hamas, but rejected Hamas's proposals for changes to the draft ceasefire agreement.

"The changes Hamas is seeking to make to the Qatari proposal were conveyed to us last night and are unacceptable to Israel," Netanyahu's office said in a statement.

Hamas has not publicly given details about its response to the US proposal, which was conveyed by mediators from Qatar and Egypt, but said on Friday that it had responded in a "positive spirit."

Indirect conversations

US President Donald Trump has renewed efforts to end the nearly 21-month war in Gaza. He will host Netanyahu in Washington on Monday.

According to media reports, the talks with Hamas will not be direct.

The talks brokered by Qatar, Egypt and the US aim to achieve a 60-day ceasefire in the Gaza war and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

According to media reports, the proposal is for the gradual release of ten Israeli hostages and the handover of the remains of the killed prisoners. In exchange, a larger number of Palestinian prisoners will be released from Israeli prisons. During the ceasefire, the parties are expected to negotiate a permanent end to the war.

Dozens killed in Gaza Strip

Sources from the Gaza Strip say that dozens of people have been killed there since the Israeli offensive began on Saturday morning.

The Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that at least 50 people had been killed in airstrikes and other incidents. Many of the casualties were among those waiting in line for food.

Gaza authorities said there had been at least 70 deaths./ CNA
