Colombia captures first underwater "narco" drone/ Starlink-powered,

It is remotely controlled with a Starlink modem and can carry more than a ton of cocaine and has a range of up to 800 miles.

Colombian drug cartels are great experts in "logistics" and try to improve their equipment every day. This is revealed by an operation carried out by the Colombian army that led to the identification of an underwater drone guided by a Starlink satellite system.

The ship, discovered on a beach in the Santa Marta region of the Caribbean, was capable of transporting a ton of cocaine and had the U.S. as a possible (future) destination. It may not have been operational yet and it is likely that the criminals were testing it.

According to investigators, this is the first ship of this type captured in the country, an evolution of the so-called narco-submarines, low-profile "ships" with a crew (3-4 elements) used since the mid-1990s to smuggle drugs to Central America and the United States.

The routes then expanded towards Europe, particularly the Iberian Peninsula, where several were seized.

The drone allows traffickers greater flexibility. It is less visible, does not require the recruitment of "sailors" and all that this entails in terms of organization, even if it has a lower load capacity than traditional models (they carry 3-4 tons of drugs). Several investigations in the past have shown how cartels, including European ones, have developed small drones, but the Colombian one is special for its satellite connection that guarantees a wide range of action.

In this regard, Navy officials have hypothesized the involvement of foreign technicians hired to install the equipment, provide assistance and solve any problems. The use of communication specialists is a constant on the part of criminal organizations. In Mexico, they helped set up a parallel radio network used by gangs to manage their activities.
