In the middle of summer/ Heavy snow falls in northeastern Turkey

A rare layer of heavy snow fell in parts of northeastern Turkey on Friday, while the rest of the country was engulfed in scorching summer heat with firefighters battling wildfires, local media reported.

Experts say human-caused climate change is causing more frequent and intense extreme weather events, from droughts to heatwaves and hailstorms.

Temperatures dropped in several mountainous areas inland from Rize, a city on Turkey's northeastern Black Sea coast, which lies about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the border with Georgia.

On Ovit Yaylasi, a plateau about 2,500 meters above sea level, fields could be seen blanketed in white, the sky above thick with snow, footage on social media showed.

The snowfall covered an area stretching at least 100 kilometers, from the Anzer Yaylasi plateau to the Kackar Mountains National Park and beyond, in a region known for its livestock. /CNA
