The World Health Organization is pressuring countries to raise the prices of sugary drinks, alcohol and tobacco by 50% over 10 years through taxation, in the biggest push yet for so-called "sin taxes" to help tackle chronic public health problems.
The UN health agency said such an increase could help reduce consumption of products that contribute to diseases such as diabetes and some types of cancer, as well as boost spending at a time when development aid is falling sharply and public debt is rising.
The WHO presented the initiative, which it called "3 to 35," at the UN Development Summit in Seville.
According to the World Health Organization, this tax initiative could generate a trillion dollars by 2035 based on data from taxes in countries such as Colombia and South Africa./CNA
