Video/ Explosion at a fireworks warehouse in California

An explosion at a fireworks warehouse in northern California caused multiple fires and forced evacuations throughout rural communities near Sacramento, officials said.

The explosion occurred near Esparto and Madison, spewing thick black smoke into the air and setting off fireworks that caused fires throughout the area.

The warehouse building collapsed, but no injuries were reported.

Authorities have asked residents to avoid the area for several days while firefighters work to control the flames, which had burned about 32 hectares by Tuesday evening.

Explosives experts will have to wait for the site to cool before they can begin an assessment.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation. /CNA
