"In a world where the most fragile are the first to suffer the devastating effects of climate change, caring for creation becomes a matter of religion and humanity."

This is one of the fragments of the message dedicated to the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation 2025, which falls in September. The Pope recalls the need for words to be followed by deeds.

Pope Leo XIV in his message warns that the Earth is being destroyed, falling into ruin.

"Extreme natural phenomena, caused by climate change, a consequence of human activities, are increasing in strength and frequency."

Pope Prevost's concern becomes more serious when he remembers that there are "medium- and long-term effects of human and ecological destruction caused by armed conflicts", as well as a lack of awareness when the destruction of nature affects, above all, the poorest.

 "In these dynamics, creation becomes a battlefield for the control of vital resources, as evidenced by agricultural areas and forests, endangered by mining, the 'scorched earth' policy, conflicts that erupt over water sources, the unequal distribution of raw materials, penalizing the weakest populations and undermining social stability itself. These various wounds are a consequence of sin," Pope Leo XIV further writes.

Environmental justice can no longer be considered an abstract concept or distant goal, but an "urgent need, which goes beyond simple environmental protection." It is about social, economic and anthropological justice./ CNA
