Air traffic controllers' strike is disrupting travel to, from and over

Around 40 percent of flights were cancelled on Friday at all Paris airports and tens of thousands of passengers were forced to rearrange plans at the height of the summer travel season, due to a strike by French air traffic controllers demanding better working conditions.

The disruptions began affecting airports across France on Thursday and intensified on Friday. The National Civil Aviation Authority asked airlines to cancel 40 percent of Friday's flights at Charles de Gaulle, Orly and Beauvais airports serving Paris, half of flights to Nice and 30 percent of flights to Marseille, Lyon and several other cities.

Despite the precautionary cancellations, the authority warned in a statement that "disruptions and long delays are expected at all French airports."

Ryanair was among the airlines to announce widespread disruptions, saying in a statement that it had cancelled more than 400 flights, affecting 70,000 passengers. The company said the strike affects all its flights over French airspace, as well as traffic in and out of French airports, and called on the European Union to reform air traffic rules.

One of the two unions leading the strike, UNSA-ICNA, said in a statement that there were not enough workers to cope with the increase in air traffic and that inflation was eroding wages. The unions are also opposing new reform measures aimed at stricter oversight of their work, prompted by a near-collapse at Bordeaux airport.

Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot called the union's demands "unacceptable" and their decision to go on strike just as schools in France are closing and many families are heading off on vacation./ Rel
