French state railway company SNCF said it was preparing to launch a tender to offer satellite internet on its trains, joining a wider European effort to use space technologies to boost passenger connectivity.
In a statement to Reuters, SNCF said it was pursuing an innovative strategy to increase the connectivity and resilience of its rail network by combining mobile terrestrial networks with satellites in low Earth orbit.
The initiative aims to cover remote areas, provide connectivity on the go and improve the passenger experience for services, such as video calling and streaming.
Among the candidates for the project are France's Eutelsat and Elon Musk's Starlink, according to a source cited by Reuters.
Although SNCF did not confirm specific discussions with providers, a Eutelsat spokesperson said the company is already in contact with SNCF for a pilot project, similar to that implemented in the United Kingdom and Kazakhstan./CNA
