Teenagers use their smartphones one-fifth of the time while driving

About one-fifth of the time, a teenage driver uses a phone while driving.

Teenage drivers spend an average of 21% of each trip looking at their phone, according to results published in the journal Traffic Injury Prevention.

Worse yet, these weren't quick glances — nearly 27% of the time drivers focused on their phone for two seconds or more, a duration that significantly increases the risk of an accident, the researchers said.

The results showed that teenage drivers most often use their phone for entertainment (65%) or to send messages (40%), with 30% using the phone's GPS.

Across the US, 35 states have banned phone use for young drivers, the researchers said in their preliminary notes.

But a previous national study found that nearly 92% of teenagers still regularly engage in texting, talking or selecting tunes on their smartphone while behind the wheel, researchers said.

For the new study, researchers asked more than 1,100 teenagers about their behaviors and beliefs regarding using smartphones while driving.

The results show that many young drivers understand that bad things can happen when they are distracted and are aware that parents and friends would not want them to engage in distractions while driving.

However, teenagers also reported that their friends often drive while distracted by their smartphones, indicating that more people may be falling prey to temptation than they would admit, the researchers said.

The researchers added that more studies are needed to better understand why teenage drivers use smartphones./ CNA
