Minister Damka denies any wrongdoing after indictment for abuse of office

Kosovo's acting Minister for Regional Development, Fikrim Damka, denied "any wrongdoing" on Saturday, a day after he was indicted for abuse of office.

Prosecutors accuse Damka and the acting secretary of this Ministry, Besim Kamberaj, of causing damage to the Kosovo budget worth around 1 million euros.

Speaking to reporters in Pristina on Saturday, Damka said he has not read the indictment, but that "I will appear willingly" in court as soon as I receive the summons.

"I am convinced that I have not committed any legal violation, any misuse, not a single cent of the Republic of Kosovo," Damka said before entering the Assembly on Saturday.

Fikrim Damka – who is the chairman of the Turkish Democratic Party of Kosovo – was appointed Minister of Regional Development in the Kurti II Government in 2021.

He added that "everything will be clarified in court, because I believe in Kosovo's justice."

Damka and Kamberaj are accused of exceeding their legal powers with the aim of obtaining material benefits for two non-governmental organizations, Germin and Swiss Caritas, during the period between August 16, 2021 and March 24, 2022.

Prosecutors accuse them of acting in violation of the Law on International Agreements and Procedures for Public Financing of NGOs, and in violation of the Ministry's powers, when they exceeded the limits of the possibility of financing NGOs from public funds, "by financing the mentioned organizations without organizing a public call."

The prosecution said it is up to the Basic Court in Pristina to, after the conclusion of the judicial review, find the defendants guilty and impose a fine and effective prison sentence on them.

If found guilty, they risk being sentenced to up to five years in prison, according to Kosovo's criminal code./ REL
