Situation in Germany, Greece and Turkey / Firefighters across Europe battle

Firefighters across Europe continue to battle wildfires amid scorching heatwaves, as flames erupted in Germany, Greece and Turkey over the weekend.

Hundreds of German firefighters have been battling the flames for days in the forest regions of Thuringia and Saxony, including the Gohrischheide nature reserve near the border with Brandenburg.

About 650 emergency personnel were deployed to the scene by noon, officials said. Fire alarms were issued via mobile apps by authorities.

While officials in Saxony described the situation there as largely stable, authorities in Brandenburg said they were prepared for a fire that could reignite.

Firefighters in Greece have made progress in controlling a fire that broke out in eastern Attica, the Greek fire service said.

Days earlier, residents were ordered to evacuate after reports of damage to homes. People living in Agios Dimitrios, Galazia Akti and Althea received emergency alerts on their phones instructing them to evacuate to the coast.

In Turkey, firefighters are said to have brought several large fires under control in the western province of Izmir.

Fueled by strong winds, the fires left homes uninhabitable and forced the evacuation of several neighborhoods as the flames reached residential areas./CNA
