Elon Musk with new party/ Trump mocks: Ridiculous, it's gone off the rails

US President Donald Trump has sharply criticized his former close ally Elon Musk over his plan to create a new political party.

"I think it's ridiculous to create a third party," Trump said. "It's always been a two-party system, and I think creating a third party just adds to the confusion."

After discussing the idea for weeks, Musk posted on X over the weekend that he had created the American Party to challenge the Republican and Democratic "Uniparty."

Trump and Musk were previously close allies, with the Tesla boss heading the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), which is tasked with helping to reduce federal spending.

Musk has repeatedly criticized government policies that increase the US national debt.

On Sunday, he said that while the new party may support a presidential candidate at some point, "the focus for the next 12 months is on the House of Representatives and the Senate."

Trump also posted on his Truth Social platform on Sunday: "I am sad to see Elon Musk completely 'off the rails'."/ CNA
