US postpones higher tariffs, but announces new taxes for some countries

President Donald Trump has officially postponed imposing higher tariffs on US imports, while sending letters to 14 countries, including Japan and South Korea, detailing the taxes they will face.

The latest development comes as the 90-day pause imposed by the White House on taxes is ending.

The president repeated his threat of a 25% tax on products entering the country from Japan and South Korea and shared a series of other letters to world leaders warning of the tariffs starting August 1.

The higher tariffs were scheduled to take effect on July 9, after previously being suspended with White House officials saying they would seek to reach trade deals.

When a reporter asked if the new August date was a firm deadline, Trump said: "I would say firm, but not 100% firm. If they call us and say they would like to do something different, we would be open to that."/ CNA
