Ukraine needs about $850 billion for reconstruction

According to Kiev's estimates, Ukraine will need billions for reconstruction after the war. According to Chancellor Merz, Russia should cover a large part of these costs.

According to Kiev's estimates, the reconstruction of Ukraine will cost about 850 billion euros and will last about 14 years. "Our concept provides for the creation of two funds," said Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal, who was connected by video to the conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine taking place in Rome.

The two-day Rome meeting is attended by about 60 countries, international organizations and private companies. To help Ukraine repair the damage of the war, a new European fund will be created, in which the private sector is also expected to participate. The money will be used mainly for the repair and construction of power plants, but also for industrial plants and digital data centers.

Russia must pay for damages in Ukraine

The first part of the "Fund for Ukraine" will be managed by Kiev and will be financed through confiscated Russian assets abroad which are worth more than 460 billion euros.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz also agrees with this idea, believing that Russia should pay for the damages caused by the attack on Ukraine.

Merz said in Rome that "Russia must pay for this damage and until this happens, Russia will not have access to its frozen assets."

The second part of the fund with a volume of almost 400 billion euros will be created through private investments.

Germany to buy weapons for Ukraine from US

The German government will buy Patriot air defense systems from the United States to make them available to Ukraine. "I spoke about this with President Trump last Thursday and also asked him to supply us with these weapon systems," Merz said in Rome.

He did not say how many systems Germany intends to buy, but according to a statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the X short messaging service, Germany will pay for two of these systems, while Norway has promised Ukraine funding for one Patriot system./ DW
