6-month mandate begins/ Cyprus takes over the presidency of the Council of the

Cyprus today took over the presidency of the Council of the EU from Denmark for a six-month term. 

This is the second time that Cyprus serves as the presiding state of the Council of the EU, a position it first held in the second half of 2012.

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides stressed that his country is taking over the presidency of the EU Council against a backdrop of acute geopolitical turmoil and unpredictability, as he pledged that Cyprus will work to strengthen EU autonomy, which he described as "the necessary next step of our evolving European integration project."

"A more autonomous Union will demonstrate the internal strength necessary to cooperate with external partners whenever possible, while also acting independently when necessary," Christodoulides declared. 

The president outlined five interrelated goals: ensuring security and strengthening defense, increasing crisis preparedness, increasing competitiveness and openness to the world, promoting universal values, and creating a budget that would support a self-sufficient union. /CNA
