Netanyahu adamant: Without complete disarmament of Hamas, US plan for Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has described the disarmament of Hamas as a key and decisive obstacle to moving to the second phase of the US peace plan for Gaza, stressing that without the complete surrender of the organization's weapons and underground military infrastructure, there can be no progress.

Speaking to the US television network Fox News, Netanyahu was asked what is making it difficult to move to the second phase of Washington's plan for Gaza.

"One word: disarmament," he replied, adding that Hamas had pledged to disarm but refuses to do so.

US officials have claimed that Hamas agreed to disarm shortly before the signing of the first phase of the deal on October 9. However, the Palestinian organization has repeatedly denied making such a commitment. The Israeli prime minister said that Hamas still has significant military power.

"They still have about 20,000 people with Kalashnikovs, which they use from time to time to execute anyone who doesn't want their tyranny to continue," he said.

According to him, the organization has about 60,000 AK-type weapons in total.

"This means disarmament: taking all these weapons, taking them out of their hands, and dismantling the terrorist tunnels that they still have - hundreds of kilometers of underground tunnels. Hamas refuses to do that ," he said.

Asked if he believed the second phase of the Gaza plan could proceed even if Hamas did not agree to disarm, Netanyahu said it should be given a chance. He said the US plan includes deploying an international stabilization force in Gaza.

"Efforts are being made to form an international force. So far it has not borne fruit, but we will give it a chance," he said.

In closing, the Israeli prime minister left open the possibility of alternative options in the event of diplomatic failure.

"If it can be done the easy way, fine. If not, it will be done another way," he said, underlining that for Israel, the disarmament of Hamas is a non-negotiable condition for any further phase in managing Gaza after the war. /CNA
