Greek farmers persist/ Few concessions from protests only for New Year

On New Year's Eve, Greek farmers in many regions are easing road blockades to facilitate holiday travel, despite tough stances on resistance.

However, they have announced that the Evzoni border crossing with North Macedonia will be blocked in both directions from until 22:00 Greek time on Tuesday, with limited exceptions for emergency cases, including vehicles transporting patients with a medical certificate and families with small children. At the Exochi border crossing with Bulgaria, a blockade for trucks will remain in force until 17:00.

Farmers are expected to decide at a meeting later in the evening to lift the blockade from Wednesday to allow New Year's traffic, although the measure is set to resume at noon on January 2. Passenger vehicles continue to pass through via a short detour.

A 12-hour blockade for trucks at the Niki border crossing with North Macedonia is expected to end at 23:00 on Tuesday, while the Promachonas border crossing with Bulgaria has been fully reopened and is expected to remain open until at least January 2. Farmers in Chalkidoni and along the Thessaloniki-Athens highway have also lifted their blockades by then, according to Greek media outlet Kathimerini.

Several roadblocks remain in western Thessaly, where farmers are scheduled to meet on Tuesday to determine their next steps. /CNA
