Putin in New Year's speech: Russia will win in Ukraine

Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country believes it will win in Ukraine, where Moscow has been conducting an offensive for nearly four years.

He made these statements in his New Year's address. Putin's traditional speech was first broadcast in the far eastern peninsula of Kamchatka, which is the first region of Russia to enter 2026.

He called on Russians to "support our heroes" fighting in Ukraine, saying: "We believe in you and in our victory."

He wished a Happy New Year to "fighters and commanders" in Ukraine, adding that "millions of people across Russia, believe me, are thinking of you."

The conflict in Ukraine has caused significant material damage in Ukraine, while human losses on both sides are estimated to be high.

The United States is leading efforts to reach an agreement to end the largest conflict in Europe since World War II.

December 31st marks the 26th anniversary of Putin's rise to power.

He became president of Russia on New Year's Eve 1999, when Boris Yeltsin resigned.

The televised New Year's address, which continues a tradition started by Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev, is a holiday ritual in Russia and is watched by millions of families.

It is broadcast on state television just before midnight in each of Russia's 11 time zones./REL
