Election of the President of Kosovo/ Kurti: I will soon hold a meeting with

Kosovo's acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, said on Wednesday that he will soon meet with the country's president, Vjosa Osmani, to discuss the election of a president early next year.

The possible lack of consensus to elect a president in April, when Osman's term ends, would lead the country back to early elections, for the second time in months.

Speaking at an event at the Kosovo Post in Pristina, Kurti said that "I will soon meet President Osmani and we need to talk with her about the way forward."

Osmani announced her intention to run for president again in April during an interview with Radio Free Europe on December 29, but it is not clear whether she will enjoy the necessary support in the upcoming Parliament.

But before that, the country must hold a new Parliament and form a new government after the December 28 elections, which gave Kurti a convincing victory.

Kurti's Vetevendosje movement won 49.34 percent of the vote, according to preliminary results, not counting conditional and diaspora votes. And Kurti expressed confidence on Wednesday that he would have no trouble forming a new government.

"The result is clearer than ever before... the blockages in the constitution of the Assembly and the formation of the new government are non-existent," Kurti said.

The early parliamentary elections of December 28 were the result of disagreements and clashes between political parties, which, after the February 9 elections, failed to constitute the Assembly until October 10.

Kurti then failed to secure enough votes in the Assembly to form a government. If the parliamentary parties fail to reach an agreement on the issue of a new president, then there will be another early election, and the country would plunge even deeper into crisis.

The President is elected by the Assembly by secret ballot, and a candidate needs at least 80 votes from deputies – out of 120 overall – in the first round.

If he does not secure them in the first round or in the second, at least 61 votes are enough in the third round, but with a quorum of 80 deputies in the hall. /REL
