"We belong to each other"/ Rubio: Europe must defend itself

 

 

During the Munich Security Conference, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the US and Europe belong together.

While Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the historic importance of a strong U.S.-Europe alliance, he also made clear that the Trump administration believes the path forward requires a change in how these countries work together.

"We want allies who can defend themselves, so that no adversary feels inclined to challenge our collective strength," Rubio said.

The Trump administration has emphasized that Europe should take more responsibility for its own defense against regional threats, instead of relying so heavily on American assistance.

"We want allies who are proud of their culture, their heritage... and together with us are willing and able to defend it," Rubio said Saturday.

"Because we in America have no interest in being polite and orderly stewards of the managed decline of the West. We do not seek to divide, but to revive an old friendship," the top American diplomat added.

"While we are prepared, if necessary, to do this alone, it is our preference and our hope to do this with you, our friends here in Europe," Rubio said.

"We belong together," Rubio added of the United States and Europe, emphasizing the importance of the decades-old partnership that has faced great strains during President Donald Trump's second term.

Rubio acknowledged that the US can, at times, be somewhat "direct and urgent in our council," but sought to reassure European leaders that the Trump administration is committed to the alliance.
