Thailand introduces birth control vaccines for wild elephants

Thailand is using a birth control vaccine on wild elephants as part of a strategy to solve a growing problem of human-elephant clashes, especially in areas where farms are encroaching on forests and the animals are losing their natural habitats.

Elephants, forced to leave their forests in search of food, have caused serious incidents among residents. Last year, wild elephants killed 30 people and injured 29 others, in addition to thousands of cases of damage to agricultural crops.

The government has secured 25 doses of a vaccine manufactured in the US and tested its effectiveness for two years in breeding elephants. This vaccine does not stop ovulation, but prevents the fertilization of eggs. The effect of the vaccine lasts for up to 7 years and the elephants can reproduce again if they do not receive a booster after this period.

The vaccination has drawn criticism, with some experts fearing that the technique could undermine conservation efforts. Elephants are an important part of Thailand's identity and are considered a national symbol, with centuries-old traditions in their use. /CNA
