Conflict with Iran threatens British economy/ Starmer promises relief measures

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir told a news conference he would use a summit with the European Union later this year to push for greater economic and security cooperation. He warned that the conflict with Iran would affect the country, but assured the public that the government was taking steps to ease the cost of living.

Opposition parties are calling for immediate intervention: the Conservatives and Reform UK are proposing to remove VAT from energy bills and repeal the fuel tax increase, the Liberal Democrats and Greens are calling for subsidies and support for energy bills, while Plaid Cymru and the SNP are calling for clarity on energy policies and regional control.

Sir Keir stressed that the government has put in place measures to ease costs, including the removal of some green taxes and an increase in the national living wage, while support for families will be determined according to developments in the conflict and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

However, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development warns that the UK could face a severe blow to economic growth due to the consequences of the war.
