Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa says Syria is determined to remain neutral in the war with Iran unless it is targeted.
Speaking to an audience at the Chatham House think tank in London, the president said Iran's interventions in Syria had helped the former Assad regime displace Syrians.
"We have no problem with Iran in Tehran, but we have a problem with Iran in Damascus," he said.
He added that he had not had contact with Iran since the outbreak of the war. The two countries do not have diplomatic relations. Al-Sharaa said Syria preferred a negotiated solution with Iran, rather than continued conflict, and that Syria would avoid being drawn into the conflict. He acknowledged that the situation in the region was so volatile that it was “a possibility” that Syria could be targeted.
We are not ready for another war, he said, adding that his government's priorities were the reconstruction and transformation of Syria and welcoming Syrian refugees./CNA, translated by BBC
