Israeli parliament approves death penalty for terrorists

The Israeli parliament has approved a bill to impose the death penalty on terrorists. 62 out of 120 Knesset members voted in favor of this highly controversial initiative by the Otzma Yehudi party, which is led by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

48 lawmakers voted against, while the rest were absent or abstained. Conservative Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also voted in favor of the bill.

De facto only Palestinians are affected

Critics consider the law racist, as in practice it mainly affects Palestinians. Under the draft law, Palestinians convicted by military courts in the occupied territories of terrorist-motivated murders could face the death penalty, as judges would be forced to impose it in such cases. The decision can be appealed. If convicted, execution would be carried out within 90 days by hanging by a prison guard.

According to the draft law, a person convicted of murder with a terrorist motive with the aim of destroying the state of Israel could be sentenced in civilian courts in Israel to death or life imprisonment.

Israel abolished the death penalty for murder in 1954. However, Israeli law continued to allow the death penalty in certain cases, such as for Nazi criminals or for treason during the war. The execution of German Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in 1962 was the last time a death sentence imposed by a court in Israel was carried out.

Calls from European ministers have no effect

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul and his counterparts from France, Italy and the United Kingdom expressed "deep concern" about the bill in a joint statement on Sunday (29.03.).

"The death penalty is an inhuman and degrading form of punishment, with no deterrent effect,"  the statement said. "Therefore, we oppose the death penalty worldwide, in all circumstances." 

Berlin, Paris, Rome and London called on the Israeli authorities to abandon these plans. /DW
