Britain to send more troops to Middle East

Additional British troops and more UK air defence systems will be deployed to the Middle East for defensive action against Iranian attacks, bringing the total number of UK personnel involved in defending the Gulf and Cyprus to around 1,000.

During a trip to the Gulf countries, Defense Secretary John Healey said additional air defense teams and systems would be deployed to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait, while the use of Typhoon jets in Qatar would be extended.

"My message to our Gulf partners is: The best of Britain will help you protect your skies," he said.

The UK's stance on the Middle East war is to take part in defensive actions, but US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticised this stance. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said on Monday that the UK would not be involved in this war, but would continue to defend its interests and allies in the region.

The defence secretary has visited Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain, as the government announced the deployment of further systems and associated teams to the countries and to Kuwait. Speaking to reporters from Qatar, Healey said the Gulf states had appreciated the contributions of UK forces, describing them as "a cornerstone" of their defence.

 

He added that Iran had "expanded" its attacks in the region and that he expected the war to continue for several weeks.
