Pope Leo wants US-Israeli war against Iran to end by Easter

Pope Leo XIV expressed hope that the US-Israeli war against Iran could end before Easter in a statement to reporters as he left the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo outside Rome on Tuesday.

"I have been told that President Trump has recently stated that he would like to end the war. I hope that he is looking for a way out. We hope that he is looking for a way to reduce the amount of violence, of bombing, which would be an important contribution to eradicating the hatred that is being created, that is constantly growing in the Middle East and elsewhere," the Pope said.

Leo called on all world leaders to return to dialogue and seek ways to reduce the amount of violence, so that "peace, especially at Easter, may reign in our hearts."

The Pope's remarks came during Holy Week, the holiest period of the year for Christians.

"It should be the holiest time of the year. It is a time of peace, a time of reflection. But, as we all know, again, in the world, in many places we are seeing so much suffering, so much death, even of innocent children. We constantly call for peace, but unfortunately, many people want to incite hatred, violence, war," the Pope said.

On Palm Sunday, the Pope said that God does not hear the prayers of those who wage war or who cite God to justify their violence, as he prayed especially for Christians in the Middle East during Mass in St. Peter's Square.

Leaders on all sides of the Iran war have used religion to justify their actions. American officials, notably Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, have invoked their Christian faith to portray the war as a Christian nation trying to defeat its enemies with military might./CNA
