The threat of Islamic terrorist attacks in Germany is significantly higher than in previous years, partly because of the war in Gaza, Germany's intelligence agency said.

"The risk of jihadist attacks is higher than it has been for a long time," the head of domestic intelligence services, Thomas Haldenwang, told DPA.

"The situation in the Middle East, following the terrorist attack by Hamas [a terrorist group designated by the US and other powers] certainly contributes to the increased threat posed by Islamic terrorism," he said.

According to him, Germany is more in the focus of jihadists than other European countries, because "together with the USA, it is considered to be one of the most important supporters of Israel".

In addition, Haldenwang also mentioned the influence of the Taliban leadership in Afghanistan, as well as the strengthening of the militant group, the Islamic State of Khorasan, in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

In May, a 25-year-old Afghan man stabbed five people at a rally organized by the anti-Islam movement, Pax Europa, in the southwestern German city of Mannheim.

He also assaulted a policeman, who later died of his injuries.

Investigators suspect that the motive behind this attack is related to Islamic extremism.

Haldenwang said that Germany currently faces three main challenges: the threat of Islamic terrorism, the rise of right-wing extremism that contributes to social tensions, and the influence of foreign espionage./REL
