Minister Benny Gantz resigns from Netanyahu's government

Israeli Minister Benny Gantz announced today his resignation from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, pulling the only centrist party from the far-right coalition amid the months-long war in Gaza.

Mr Netanyahu made a brief statement urging Mr Gantz not to "abandon the front", but his departure will not jeopardize the 64-seat parliamentary majority in Israel's 120-seat parliament, known as the Knesset, where the coalition has a majority. of the right wing in power.

"Mr Netanyahu is preventing us from progressing to real victory. That is why we are leaving the government today," Mr Gantz told a news conference.

Mr. Gantz's resignation was expected since he gave the Israeli prime minister until June 8 to come up with a clear strategy on how to deal with Gaza after the war.

His resignation means Mr Netanyahu will lose the support of the centrist bloc that has helped shore up support for the government inside and outside Israel at a time of heightened diplomatic and domestic pressure eight months into the Gaza war. / VOA
