The Western Balkans is facing disinformation from Russia, through which Moscow tries to hinder the integration of the region in the European Union.

This is what the spokeswoman of the European Union in Kosovo, Ioanna Lachana, said during an interview for The Geopost platform.

According to her, the Kremlin is trying to spread pro-Russian narratives in Kosovo, and negatively present everything that is pro-West.

Something like that, according to her, can increase tensions.

"We have seen propaganda about inter-ethnic tensions, that a new war could break out. This is very dangerous, it can increase tensions. That's why the European Union has always said that disinformation is an issue that affects security".

The highest state officials in Kosovo have mentioned several times that Russia's efforts in the Balkans spread through its "satellite, Serbia", and that the Russian state tries to take advantage of the tensions between Kosovo and Serbia.

Belgrade constantly denies these positions.

Lachana has said that the moment such Russian propaganda is spread and repeated, there may be people who start to feel against the West.

"If information is manipulated, then our public discourse is also affected. The Western Balkans is no exception. We see influence here as well, especially from Russia, which tends to obstruct the path of the partners of the Western Balkans towards integration into the European Union. Of course, no one can fight this phenomenon alone. We must work together and involve everyone".

Lachana also mentioned the new strategy of the United States to fight disinformation in Europe, especially in the Balkans, which includes the support of democracies, free media and the protection of human rights.

Months ago, French security agencies discovered the so-called "Portal Nations" network of 193 online sites, which has spread disinformation with the aim of dividing Western societies./ Rel
