The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, was attacked by a man in a square in the capital Copenhagen, her office announced late Friday.

"Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was beaten on Friday evening at Kultorvet [square] in Copenhagen by a man who was then arrested," her office said in a media release.

The Prime Minister is "shocked by this incident", her Office added, without giving further details.

The Danish police announced on the X social network that they have arrested the suspect and that they are investigating the incident, not wanting to give further details.

The attack on her happened two days before the Danes vote in the European elections.

Three weeks ago, the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, was seriously injured in an assassination attempt.

Frederiksen had attended an event for the European Parliament elections together with leading Social Democrat candidate Christel Schaldemose on Friday afternoon, Danish broadcaster TV2 reported.

Her Social Democratic Party is the largest party in the governing coalition.

Danish Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke wrote on the social network X: "Mette is shocked by this attack. I have to say that it shocks all of us who are close to him."

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, said that she "strongly condemns this terrible attack".

"Violence against any leader is an attack on the spirit of democracy", Osmani wrote in X.

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, wrote in X that he feels "terrified".

"I strongly condemn this ugly act of aggression," he wrote./REL
