A 59-year-old man in Mexico has died from a strain of bird flu, H5N2, never seen in humans before.

It is unclear how he got it, although there have been cases on several poultry farms in Mexico, the BBC reports.

Infections like this can sometimes be passed from animals to humans. The man had other underlying health problems that probably prevented him from surviving this infection. 

"There is no evidence that the virus can start spreading between people and cause an outbreak," the experts said. 

The World Health Organization and other authorities monitor strains of influenza, such as this one, that may mutate and the possibility of becoming a threat cannot be ruled out./CNA
