Borrell: EU supports Biden's Gaza ceasefire plan

The European Union (EU) fully supports the plan presented by the president of the United States, Joe Biden, which would enable a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages and an increase in humanitarian aid, the bloc's top diplomat, Josep Borrell, said in a statement.

A cease-fire plan announced last week by US President Joe Biden includes, among other things, a complete cease-fire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from populated areas in Gaza, the delivery of aid there and the release of hostages by Hamas - the declared Palestinian group terrorist organization from the USA and the EU.

"The European Union appreciates the determined efforts of the US, Egypt and Qatar in facilitating negotiations to end the war between Israel and Hamas, while ensuring Israel's security, to which the EU remains fully committed." said the statement.

An aide to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel has accepted it, although he says the plan is flawed and still needs work.

Hamas said that it welcomes the initiative of President Biden, but that it demands guarantees that it will end the offensive in Gaza, which, according to it, has left more than 36,000 people dead.

"A durable ceasefire is urgently needed to ensure the protection of civilians, the unconditional and immediate release of all hostages whose safety and well-being are of concern, and to increase the flow of much-needed humanitarian aid to Gaza." it is said, among other things, in the statement.

In the end, the EU has asked the parties to accept and fulfill the three-phase proposal, saying that "it is ready to contribute to the revival of a political process for a lasting peace, based on the two-state solution, and to support an effort international coordinated for the reconstruction of Gaza".

Hamas attacked Israel on October 7 last year, killing over 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages.

After this attack, the war started in the Gaza Strip - controlled by Hamas.

Dozens of hostages taken by this group were released during a ceasefire in November, while several others were found - dead or alive - by Israeli troops./ Rel
