Record tourism figures in Italy in 2023

Italy has recorded the highest number of tourists ever in 2023, according to the latest data from the State Statistics Office, Istat and the Ministry of Tourism.

Last year, Italy recorded more than 134 million tourists and about 451 million accommodations, according to Italian authorities.

Istat has said that last year's figures were a record, and compared to 2022, the number of visitors has increased by 13.4 percent - which means around 16 million more holidaymakers.

The figures also exceed those of 2019, a year before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, when 131 million vacationers were registered.

Italy is one of the most popular destinations for tourists and more than half of them are foreigners. The rest are made up of Italians who do domestic tourism.

The regions with the most visitors are Veneto, the Venice area, Tuscany, Lombardy and Lazio, not excluding the capital, Rome.

However, these numbers are not good news for all Italians.

Venice, Rome and some Tuscan cities are overcrowded during the holiday season.

Therefore, the residents of these areas call more and more for the number of tourists to be controlled or limited.
