The Indian Prime Minister's alliance leads in the elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to have a majority in the Lower House of Parliament, TV channels in India reported, citing preliminary election results.

According to them, Modi's alliance is in the lead with more than 300 mandates in the House with 543 seats, while the opposition parties have nearly 200.

India's parliamentary elections - the world's largest - were held in seven phases over the past six weeks.

Nearly a billion people were registered to vote. The first votes to be counted were those by mail, cast mainly by troops serving outside their constituencies or officials on election duty.

This year, postal voting was also made available to residents over 85 and people with disabilities. If confirmed, Modi will secure a third consecutive term as prime minister.
