With 56% of the votes, for the first time Mexico is expected to have a woman

Claudia Sheinbaum is expected to become the first female president of Mexico, exit polls show.

According to them, she will secure about 56% of the votes from Sunday's elections, convincingly defeating her main rival, businesswoman Xochitl Galvez.

If exit polls are confirmed, Sheinbaum will replace her mentor, outgoing president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, starting Oct. 1.

Sheinbaum promised a continuation of his policies, saying he would follow the "advances" made by Lopez Obrador.

Their Morena party has already declared victory, but Galvez asked her supporters to wait for the official results, which will be made public on Monday.

The election, which pitted Sheinbaum against Galvez, was described as a sea change for women's rights in Mexico.

Sheinbaum, 61 years old, previously served as mayor of Mexico City./ Rel
