Iran, former President Ahmadinejad is vying to succeed Raisi

Former hardline Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad registered to run in the June 28 presidential election, which will be held following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash last month. Iran's state television announced on Sunday the registration of candidate Ahmadinejad.

However, he may be barred from contesting the election.

Iran's 12-member Constitutional Council, under the direction of Supreme Leader Khamenei, will review and verify the candidates' records and on June 11 will make public the list of those who meet the criteria to run in the election.

So far, Ahmadinejad is the most popular name to register in the race. Speaking after the recording, he vowed to seek "constructive engagement" with the world and improved economic relations with all countries.

He was elected president of Iran in 2005 and stepped down in 2013 due to term limits.

He was barred by the Constitutional Council from running in the 2017 election, a year after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned him that running was not "in his and the country's interest".

Relations between them soured after Ahmadinejad made clear calls to check Khamenei's authority.

In 2018, in a rare criticism of Khamenei, Ahmadinejad wrote to the Supreme Leader calling for "free" elections.

Khamenei backed Ahmadinejad after his re-election in 2009 sparked protests that killed dozens and arrested hundreds, shaking the ruling theocracy, before security forces led by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps ( IRGC) to violently quell the riots./ VOA
