Serbian authorities: A Kosovar is arrested in Merdare for "war crimes"

The Serbian authorities announced on Saturday that they have arrested a Kosovar at the border point that connects Serbia with Kosovo, on suspicion of "war crimes".

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior of Serbia (MIB), Ivica Dacic, said that Tefik Mustafa was arrested on the afternoon of June 1 in Merdara for "war crimes against civilians in Kosovo".

In a press release, the Serbian MIA emphasized that Mustafa, "as a member of the KLA [Kosovo Liberation Army], was mentioned in witness statements as a participant in the kidnapping of police officers Goran Marinkovic, ?ivojin Pavi? and Predrag Milosevic, on 19 June 1999 on the Pristina - Gjilan road, all traces of which were lost".

"The person will be handed over to the Prosecutor's Office for War Crimes", said Dacic, according to the communiqué.

Radio Free Europe has addressed questions to the Foreign Ministry of Kosovo and the Kosovo Police regarding the reported arrest of the Kosovar citizen.

In the last three years, several Kosovo citizens have been arrested in Serbia on suspicion of having committed crimes during the 1998-99 war in Kosovo.

On April 17, Serbian authorities arrested Kosovar citizen Sadik Duraku, who also holds British citizenship, on suspicion of "war crimes" in 1999 - charges denied by his family. Durak was arrested at a border crossing between Croatia and Serbia, and a Serbian court remanded him in custody that same month.

His family members say that the charges against Durak do not stand, as he, before the war in 1999, lived with his family in England.

At the beginning of this year, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, accused Serbia of what he described as unjust, deliberate and malicious arrests of Kosovo citizens./ Rel
