Netanyahu: There cannot be a permanent cease-fire without the extermination of
Benjamin Netanyahu

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday that there will be no permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip without the destruction of the governing and military capacities of Hamas - the group declared a terrorist by the United States and the European Union.

He said this in an online statement, a day after US President Joe Biden indicated that Israel had proposed a three-phase cease-fire deal in Gaza in exchange for the release of Israeli hostages from Hamas.

"Israel's conditions for ending the war have not changed: the destruction of Hamas's governing and military capabilities, the release of all hostages, and the guarantee that Gaza never again poses a threat to Israel," Netanyahu said.

He added that Israel will continue to insist "that these conditions are met, before the permanent ceasefire is implemented".

"There is no chance that Israel will agree to a permanent ceasefire without meeting these conditions," he added.

Meanwhile, Hamas said it is ready to engage "positively and constructively" on any proposal that includes a permanent ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the reconstruction of Gaza, the return of the displaced, and a "genuine" exchange of prisoners. , "if Israel clearly announces that it is committed to such an agreement".

Israel launched the war in Gaza in response to an attack by Hamas in southern Israel on October 7 that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapped around 250 others.

Israel says more than 100 hostages are still being held in Gaza, along with the bodies of around 30 others.

Since then, Israel's war in Gaza has killed more than 36,000 Palestinians, half of them children and women, according to Palestinian health officials. /REL
