UN: 114 million people displaced by conflict

The number of people who have fled their homes due to war, violence and persecution has reached 114 million, and this number is increasing because states have failed to combat the causes, while the parties involved in the wars continue to refuse to respect international law.

This is what the head of the United Nations refugee agency, Filipo Grandi, said. He criticized the UN Security Council, which is responsible for maintaining international peace and security, saying it has failed to use its voice to try to resolve conflicts ranging from Gaza and Ukraine to Sudan to Congo, Myanmar and other parts.

He also accused states - without mentioning names - of taking "short-sighted foreign policy decisions that are often based on double standards, that only declare that they respect the law, but that the Council has little power to respect peace and security". .

Grandi said that disrespecting international law means that "parties in conflict" have "stopped respecting the laws of war" even though some of them claim to be respecting them.

The result of all this is more civilian deaths, the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war, the attacks and destruction of hospitals, schools and other civilian infrastructure, and the targeting of humanitarian workers, Grandi said.

Grandi criticized the Security Council for tens of thousands of people killed in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and other conflicts.

"But it is not too late to put your focus and energy into the crises and conflicts that are still unresolved, so that they do not worsen and erupt again. It is not too late to help the millions of people who have been forcibly displaced," he said.

The Security Council is highly polarized, as the five veto-wielding states often block decisions.

As for the war in Gaza, the Council has not called for a cease-fire, due to opposition from the United States. Meanwhile, as far as Ukraine is concerned, the Council has been ineffective since Russia can use the veto to block the adoption of any possible resolution./ VOA
