Shooting attack/ Slovak Prime Minister leaves the hospital

The Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has left the hospital and been sent home after receiving treatment for 2 weeks at a hospital in the central city of Banska Bystrica.

On May 15, an assailant shot Fico with four bullets at close range as he greeted supporters at a government meeting in the central Slovak city of Handlova, Reuters reports. 

The attack left Fico, 59, in a critical condition and requiring a five-hour operation and another two days later.

The assailant, identified as 71-year-old Juraj C., was arrested on the spot and charged with premeditated attempted murder.

The incident - the first major assassination attempt on a European political leader in more than 20 years - has highlighted the deep polarization of politics in the central European country of 5.4 million people./ CNA
