Slovenia ready to recognize the state of Palestine

"The government of Slovenia adopted on Thursday a decision on the recognition of Palestine as an independent and sovereign state," declared Prime Minister Robert Golob during a press conference. This action follows in the footsteps of other countries such as Spain, Ireland and Norway, and has provoked strong reactions from Israel, writes Reuters.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz criticized the decision, saying it rewards Hamas for acts of violence, referring to the October 7 attack by the Palestinian Islamist group that led to the current conflict in Gaza. Katz considered this a reward for "murder and rape".

At the press conference in Ljubljana, Golob stressed that the recognition of Palestine is part of a wider effort to coordinate pressure on Israel to end the conflict in Gaza. He called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the release of all hostages.

"This is the message of peace," Golob said, as the government raised the Palestinian flag alongside those of Slovenia and the EU in front of the government building in central Ljubljana.

Slovenia's decision follows similar actions by Spain, Ireland and Norway on May 28, which were also criticized by Israel.

Of the 27 EU members, several countries such as Sweden, Cyprus, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria have already recognized the Palestinian state. Malta may do so soon.

Britain and Australia are considering recognition, while France has said now is not the right time. Germany and the United States remain committed to a two-state solution through dialogue, rejecting unilateral approaches.

Meanwhile, Denmark's parliament voted on Tuesday to recognize the Palestinian state. Norway, which heads the international donor group for the Palestinians, has changed its strategy to support the recognition of Palestine./ CNA
