The Iranian court sentences the journalist to 21 years in prison for propaganda

The Islamic Revolutionary Court in the west of Iran has sentenced journalist Zina Modares Gorji to 21 years in prison, because she has publicly supported women's rights.

The Kurdish human rights organization Kurdpa reported that Judge Mohammad Karami handed Gorji a combined prison sentence. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison for "creating an illegal group, with the aim of overthrowing the regime", as well as another 10 years in prison for "collaborating with hostile groups and governments".

Gorji was sentenced to an additional year of imprisonment for "propaganda against the regime".

Under Iranian law, when a defendant receives multiple sentences in the case against him, then the longest sentence applies, meaning she will serve 10 years in prison. However, the court said she must also serve a sentence of 10 years in exile afterwards.

Her supporters said she was notified of the sentence officially on May 23 and that her legal team appealed the court's ruling.

Her lawyers requested that the case be retried and challenged the court's decision, calling it harsh and politically motivated.

The exile sentence, analysts say, shows how far Iranian authorities are willing to go to silence dissent, following nationwide uproar over the death of Mahsa Amin in police custody for allegedly violating the hijab, or headscarf, law. , in September 2022. Gorji was first arrested during the protests inspired by Amini.

After spending 40 days in custody, Gorji was temporarily released on bail.

She was arrested again in April 2023 and spent about a month in a closed cell before being transferred to a general prison.

Last month, she announced on Instagram that her bookstore in Sanandaj was forcibly closed for several days by local authorities because it allegedly did not comply with mandatory hijab laws./ Rel
