Danish Prime Minister Mete Frederiksen wants the European Union to set an age limit of 15 for social media use, in an effort to better protect young smartphone users from harmful content and screen addiction. 

"Today you can create a profile on most platforms if you are only 13 years old. But when you are 13, you are still a child. And we have seen that the risk for children on social networks is very high," Frederiksen said in an article for the Danish newspaper "Politiken". 

She believes that the age limit should be accompanied by effective means, because "the giants of technology are not responsible for this".

"The new content moderation regulation, the Digital Services Act (DSA), has proven insufficient to counter the platforms," ??writes Frederiksen.

The Prime Minister put forward proposals to "tighten the law", including banning models and addictive advertising to minors and mandatory reporting of how much time they spend on online platforms.

The idea of ??raising the age limit echoes French President Emmanuel Macron's call last month to allow access to social media for over 15s./ CNA
