The number of Israelis of German origin applying for naturalization has increased, the RND media group said on Monday, citing Germany's Federal Office of Administration.

According to the report, 6,869 applications were received in the January-April period of this year, compared to 9,129 in 2023 and 5,670 in 2022.

From August 2021, all those who were persecuted by the Nazi regime, because of their political, racial and religious beliefs, as well as their descendants, have the legal right to be provided with a German passport.

Descendants of Nazi victims who fled Germany also have the right to receive a German passport, without any conditions.

Since the launch of attacks by the Palestinian group Hamas - declared a terrorist by the United States and the European Union - on October 7 of last year, in the south of Israel, there has been an increase in interest in such applications.

In that attack, Hamas militants killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 250 hostages.

Hamas is still holding about 100 people hostage.

According to the health authorities of Gaza, as a result of the Israeli offensive, launched after that, about 36,000 Palestinians have been killed.

Israel blames Hamas, on the grounds that it is operating in residential areas.

The German authorities announced that in 2023, 14,000 requests for naturalization were submitted.

After Israel, the biggest requests are from American citizens./ REL
