Kurti: Census data, basis for better decisions
Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that the results of the population census will enable institutions to create policies, strategies and make better decisions for more sustainable development.

Kurti made these statements during the ceremony held on May 25 to mark the completion of the population, household and housing census in Kosovo.

"The collected data will be the basis for better policies, strategies and decisions, for an even faster and more stable development of our country", said Kurti.

The population census started on April 5. Initially, it was scheduled to end on May 17, but after the requests of some municipalities, the process was postponed until May 24.

During this process, the diaspora was also able to register through an online platform.

The Kosovo Statistics Agency assessed the registration process as successful.

"The population census, as one of the largest and most complex projects of a country in peacetime, despite the challenges and complexity it has had, was carried out with great success. The success was achieved thanks to the cooperation and coordination that KAS had with the institutions other [domestic and international]", it was said in the press release of KAS.

On April 5, when the census began - Lista Serbe, the main party of Serbs in Kosovo which enjoys the support of Belgrade - had said that Serbs would not participate in the population census process.

The last population census in Kosovo, in 2011, was not held in the four municipalities in the north - North Mitrovica, Leposaviq, Zubin Potok and Zveçan - inhabited by a majority of Serbs, while Serbs from other municipalities in the south, at the invitation of Belgrade, had mostly boycotted the process.

According to the Law on population, household and housing registration, any person can be fined from 30 to 2,000 euros if they refuse to provide the information requested by the registrar.

Fines are even greater, up to 20,000 euros, for businesses./ Rel
