The Hague Court orders Israel / "Immediately stop the offensive in Rafah"

The International Court of Justice ordered Israel to "immediately halt" the military offensive in Rafah, south of Gaza.

While reading the decision, ICJ President Nawaf Salam said that the situation in Gaza has worsened and that "the State of Israel must immediately stop the military offensive and any other action in the Rafah region that could endanger the lives of Palestinians in Gaza." .

The court also ordered Israel to immediately open the border crossing between Egypt and Gaza to allow the passage of humanitarian aid.

Today's decision by the Hague-based Court came after South Africa's request for a halt to the Israeli offensive in Rafah.

The International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court, is the highest legal body of the United Nations to deal with disputes between states. Its decisions are final, but in the past they have not been enforced. The court has no binding power.

Israel is unlikely to implement today's decision, but it increases pressure on the increasingly isolated country. Criticism of Israel on the way it is conducting the war in Gaza has increased, especially regarding the operations in Rafah. Criticism has come even from its closest ally, the United States./ VOA
