Biden and Trump in the race for women's votes

American women voters make up over half of the electorate in the United States. VOA correspondent Scott Stearns takes a look at the strategies of presidential candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump to win their support in the November election.

In this election campaign, much of the attention being paid to American voters is focused on abortion laws and reproductive rights.

But on the shoulders of American voters there are many other issues beyond abortion, and the election staffs are now trying to win their support through economic issues, health and the fight against crime.

In Minnesota, voter Rebecca Jensen says President Joe Biden should be given credit for what she calls fair decisions.

"Environmental issues are very important. Economy and health are important. I am a healthcare worker and still dealing with COVID. People say that we are now in the post-pandemic period, but we really are not. We are still in the middle of the pandemic. It is important to have a man in the White House who believes in science," says voter Jensen.

In Nevada, voter Julie Benb wants a second term for Mr. Donald Trump.

"He was good on economic matters. There was no war. There was harmony. There was peace. We were all employed. The price of gasoline was normal. He is a wonderful man who loves his country. He is a good man. He raised a good family and we will re-elect him," says voter Benb.

Through a White House initiative that will focus on researching health issues facing women, President Biden is aiming to win women's support.

"With all the advances that have been made in medicine, in all aspects, women's health was not part of them. The research did not include women," Mr. Biden said.

Mr. Biden's campaign headquarters aired a Mother's Day ad on social media attacking Mr. Trump's policies to separate immigrant families, with the slogan, “Do your mothers a favor. Stop Trump.”

In a meeting with conservative Christian women, Mr Trump vowed to bring peace to Europe.

"Before I enter the Oval Office, shortly after being elected president, I will find a solution to the terrible war between Russia and Ukraine," he declared.

Mr. Trump is also trying to win the support of American voters with messages about the fight against crime and migration.

"I believe that I have the strong support of women in the peripheral areas because they want security. They are being robbed of their jewelry, their bags, the money they have in them, electronic devices, watches. And people ask what's going on? If you don't want criminal illegal immigrants to sneak through your windows and raid your drawers, then you should vote to remove the criminal Joe Biden and the damage he can cause as soon as possible," according to Mr. Trump.

The Center on American Women and Politics says the number of women who have voted in presidential elections since 1980 has outnumbered men.

In the 2020 race, according to data from the Pew Institute, Mr. Biden won 11 percent more women's votes than Mr. Trump./ VOA
