Resolution on Srebrenica/ The UN General Assembly convenes

The General Assembly of the United Nations votes today on a proposal-resolution on the genocide in Srebrenica. The debate on it is expected to start at 16:00.

The resolution proposes that July 11 be declared the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Srebrenica Genocide.

Its official proponents were Germany and Rwanda.

So far, all the countries of the Western Balkans, except Serbia and the Serbian entity of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Republika Srpska, have expressed their support for it.

Their officials, despite the decisions of international courts, deny that genocide was committed in Srebrenica against Bosniaks and say that a "terrible crime" took place there.

In July 1995, Bosnian Serb forces killed over 8,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica.

For the committed genocide, more than 50 people were sentenced to about 700 years in prison.

Among them are the wartime president of Republika Srpska, Radovan Karad?i?, and the commander-in-chief of the then Serbian army, Ratko Mladi?. Both of them were sentenced to life imprisonment.

Serbia actively lobbied against the adoption of the resolution on Srebrenica and, the day before it went to the UN, the Assembly of Republika Srpska adopted a note of protest addressed to member states of the United Nations, calling for the resolution to be withdrawn.

This, despite the fact that neither Republika Srpska nor Serbia is mentioned in the document.

The International Court of Justice in The Hague characterized the crime in Srebrenica as genocide in 2007.

The court concluded that Serbia was neither responsible for the act nor complicit, but stated that it did nothing to prevent it./ Rel
