Russia, nuclear drills near the border with Ukraine

Russia has launched the "first phase" of exercises in the southern military district to increase the readiness of tactical nuclear forces near the border with Ukraine, the Russian Defense Ministry said on May 21.

The ministry said that "the exercises aim to maintain the readiness of the personnel and equipment of combat units of non-strategic nuclear weapons to respond and guarantee the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Russian state".

On May 6, authorities announced plans to hold these exercises.

The West has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of "Russia's continued irresponsible behavior".

The area where the exercises are being held is in the southern Russian regions that border Ukraine, Crimea, which Russia illegally annexed from Ukraine in 2014, and four Ukrainian regions that Russia says it annexed in 2022, and which it partially controls.

When the drills were announced on May 6, the Russian Ministry of Defense stated that they would be held in response to "provocative statements and threats by certain Western officials directed at the Russian Federation."

Tactical nuclear weapons include aerial bombs, nuclear warheads for short-range missiles, and artillery munitions. These types of weapons are less powerful than strategic weapons, which are intercontinental ballistic missiles with large nuclear warheads that can destroy entire cities./ VOA
